Jamie Cullum Concert 2015.
Jamie Cullum came back to Swindon to inspire the next generation!
Last year January Commonweal School in Old Town, Swindon were the very lucky recipients of Jamie Cullum’s preloved Yamaha grand piano, won by popular vote following a national competition.
On Monday 28th September Jamie came in to school to deliver a masterclass and recital to students and music teachers from across Swindon. Three students had the opportunity to perform with him and he has left a lasting impression on all who saw him.
“It was really scary but when he was talking it made me feel less nervous as he is so friendly,” said student Leah Fitzpatrick.
“Huge thanks to students and staff of the Commonweal School for inviting me to visit to share some ideas and music. I am really inspired, it’s great to be in a building full of people who are interest in creating music and inspiring others and that’s clearly that’s what happens at Commonweal,” said Jamie Cullum.
“ I’m still buzzing with excitement! It was such a special experience for the whole Commonweal community. The students were really wowed by his passion for the piano and we already have students wishing to start piano lessons on the back of it. The piano is used every day for piano lessons and playing on such a really good quality instrument really does make a great difference to the learning experience. We are incredibly lucky to have won the piano and I’d like to thank all who voted for us last year as well as Jamie himself for giving us his beloved Yamaha piano. He is welcome back anytime!
“We have been the proud owners of ‘Jamie’s beloved Yamaha piano’ for 9 months now and the impact has been fantastic! Commonweal piano students regularly have their lessons on the piano from our visiting Swindon Music Cooperative teachers and are able to make better progress than they would do using the electric pianos we have elsewhere in the school.
The students in our sixth form have also benefitted from the instrument as it is housed in their purpose built auditorium which allows A level music students access to the piano at any point in the school day for practice or entertaining their friends.
"Other Swindon schools and community users have also appreciated having
the new piano for rehearsals and events. It’s so inspiring for the students and staff to have such a magnificent instrument in our school. If it was left to us, we would never have been able to afford to buy such an instrument so we will be forever grateful to Jamie and his team,” said Ali Sutcliffe, Head of Expressive Arts.
